Lancaster Smokehouse (Kitchener)

This place is on Lancaster a block north of Bridgeport Rd. in Kitchener. Parking on  the weekend is a challenge.

This is the old Lancaster hotel dating back to the turn of the last century and its look and feel certainly tell of its age. You enter a small cramped reception area with a small waiting room to the left that had its walls lined with what only could be described as church pews. Its is certainly not an inviting space to wait for a table in. We opted to go to the bar which is at the far end of the main room. The bar is an odd L shape, cluttered and busy and yes old looking. Several permanent "bar islands" surround the area with stools. We (5 of us) ended up at a round one with a pole in the middle. That happened to be, so the sign said, an original support column of the building that survived a fire some decades ago...and it looked the part. If you are looking for a place with Grandios atmosphere this place will disappoint; its is rustic, simple and has a tired look that is, as we found out, as comforting as its food.

We ordered a pitcher at the bar of a micro-brew lager which was quite good. They said the wait was 45 minutes...we were seated in 25....under promise and over deliver is always a way to make patrons of any place happy. After some menu study at the bar we decided on the 5 meat platter with numerous sides. Pork side ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket, BBQ chicken, jerked Ox tail. We got hugmugo chicken wings to get things started. Sides were Creemore beer battered onion rings, mac and cheese, beans, coleshaw.

The platter was HUGE.

Everything was excellent. Right amount of smoke and sauce, meat was melt in your mouth tender, sides were great (onion rings we could have eaten all night). The only downer...the Ox tail. The jerk over powered the meat instead of being a side player.

Service was prompt and friendly. The tab for 5 of us, platter, sides, two pitchers and 4 cocktails $136.....

This place will see us back soon.
