Bijou

This little Gem has been around a few years and is in an odd place. The back of the establishment "backs" on to Wellington street and you can not enter from the street and the "front" is in the alley that runs along the Erie st. parking lot just south of Allens Alley.

We have eaten there twice now. Once about a year ago and again about 2 weeks ago. Both times were excellent. First trip we had the veal cheeks as our main course and they were melt in your mouth tender and wonderfully presented.

Second trip we had the Salmon appetizer. It was a piece of "cured" salmon with a very light sauce. Excellent flavour. The main was the pork tenderloin and was perfectly cooked.

I had ordered a Hendricks Gin martini. I like Gin probably more than I should and had not tried Hendricks before. Unfortunately it will not get a return visit as it was not to my liking. I told the waitress she promptly made me a bombay martini and the charge for hendricks was taken off the bill.

The atmosphere is a little spartan but it suits the space. The semi open kitchen is a nice touch. The menu is on a chalk board and changes regularly. It is however hard to read.

Although this is not a cheap place I found the food/atmosphere for money ratio to be quite within reason. Two courses each, a couple glasses of wine and the martini for just under $100.

Re: Bijou

I've always walked by this place and wondered if it was a real restaurant (open to the public) or if I needed a special membership to eat there. smile  The entrance seemed so secretive and hidden.  I thought it was where all the Stratford celebs (smile) went to dine in peace.

Re: Bijou

As most know Bijou was sold and has new owners. The layout has changed and a bar has been installed in the section that was closest to Wellington. We stopped in for a meal in the late fall (2015) hoping to enjoy the usual style and food that had made this place so great in the past.

We were very disappointed. The menu was laughably small and underwhelming and the food....ok.

We'll give it one more try in the spring when the season gets back to full swing. Hopefully they have figured out that the successful formula of the "old" Bijou was not a fluke.
